Product editor

The Product editor is where a product takes shape: the steps your customer walks through, the questions in each step, and the options under each question. Everything the customer sees in the configurator comes from here.

This page describes the screen and the concepts. For the depth — formulas, price logic, visibility — the logic editor and the repetition logic have a help button, which takes you to Price management.

Where to find it

Manager → Configurations → click a product. If the product has a development version, that is the one that opens; the live product is edited deliberately and separately (see Live and development).

The screen

The editor has three columns, with a toolbar above them.

ColumnWhat it is
Structure (left)The tree of the whole product. This is where you select what you edit, and where you add items.
Preview (middle)The configurator itself. It follows your changes as you make them, also before you save. Switch between Desktop and Mobile in the toolbar; the reload button in the preview loads it again. Click an element in the preview to select it in the tree.
Edit panel (right)The blocks belonging to the selected item, spread over the tabs Content, Pricing and Logic. Click a block's title to collapse or expand it.

With nothing selected the edit panel only shows Select an item from the list to edit.

Next to the three edit tabs there is Logs: select a feature and it explains why that feature is visible or hidden and how its price is built up in the configuration shown in the preview. If your company uses the workbook, a Workbook tab appears as well once a sheet is linked to the product.

The structure

A product has four levels. Each level contains the next.

LevelWhat it isExample
ProductThe whole thing. Carries the settings that apply to everything.Dining table
Step (Stap)One screen in the flow, shown with a numbered circle in the tree.Tabletop
FeatureOne question inside that step.Material
SubfeatureOne choice inside that question.Oak

Only features of a selection type have subfeatures. A number, text or file feature is the answer itself, so it has no chevron to expand.

A step of type info is the exception: that is the form at the end of the flow. It has no features and is always shown last.

Working in the tree

  • Adding — every row that can hold items has a + button: on the product it is Add step, on a step Add feature, and on a feature Add subfeature. New items are called New step, New feature or New subfeature; give them a name and an ID straight away.
  • Dragging — grab a row by the grip on the right. Drop it between rows of the same level to reorder, or drop a feature on another step (or a subfeature on another feature) to move it there. A subfeature that is linked to a workbook row cannot be moved to another feature. A feature can also be moved with the Step field in the General block.
  • Searching — the search field in the toolbar (Cmd/Ctrl + K) filters every level at once and expands the matches. Enter jumps to the next match; the arrows next to the field go back and forth.
  • Trying it out — the tree doubles as a test: click the round or square icon in front of an option to select it in the preview, and type a value straight into the tree for a number or text feature. Items that are hidden by logic in that configuration are faded out, and a step that repeats is shown once per repetition.
  • Marks on a row — a dot means unsaved changes, a crossed-out eye means the item is not in the configurator, a link icon means the item is managed by or linked to the workbook, a warning sign means the feature ID is used twice, and on the product itself an icon shows whether you are on the live or the concept version.

What you set per level

The blocks in the edit panel change with the selected item and with the tab you have open.

The General block

This block is always at the top.

  • Name is what the customer reads. The button next to it capitalises the first letter.
  • ID is what formulas and logic refer to, recognisable by the @ in front of it. The field corrects your input as you type: spaces become underscores, capitals become lower case, and the remaining punctuation is dropped. Pick something readable — color_top_oak still reads well years later.
  • Type only appears on an empty step, and chooses between a regular features step and an info step.
  • Step appears on a feature and moves it to another step. This change is saved immediately.

Features

A feature is one question. The feature type decides what kind of answer the customer gives; the display type decides what the question looks like.

Adding a feature

  1. In the tree, expand the step it belongs to and click Add feature.
  2. Give it a name and an ID in the ID block.
  3. On the Content tab, in the Data block, pick a feature type.
  4. Pick a display in the Display block below it.
  5. On a selection type, add the options as subfeatures.

A feature without an ID or without a type is not saved — you get a message on screen instead.

Per type you choose how the question is shown.

Number inputInput, Box with +/−, Slider, read only
Text boxBox, Area, Colour Picker (Hex), Colour Picker (Hex + Alpha)

Nearly every type also offers Hide (Verbergen). The feature still counts towards the calculation, but the customer never sees it — useful for values you work out yourself.

On the Round, Image and Cards displays a slider Items per row appears (1 to 12).

Subfeatures

Each subfeature is one option: a name, a price, and on a selection feature an image you pick from the media browser or drop onto it.

For a long list of options it is quicker to work outside the editor: Export in the Subfeatures block writes all subfeatures of that feature to a CSV file, and Import reads such a file back in. That is how you update a hundred-line price list in one go.

The toolbar

The toolbar belongs to the item you have selected.

Undo / RedoUndoes or redoes your last change — or Cmd/Ctrl + Z and Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + Z
Edit liveUnlocks a live product; without it every field is locked

DiscardThrows away all unsaved changes in the product, after a confirmation
SaveSaves all changes in the product — or Cmd/Ctrl + S. On a development version the button is called Save concept
PublishPublishes the development version to live

If your company uses the workbook, the Workbook tab of the toolbar holds the actions for linking a feature or subfeature to a workbook sheet.

Saving, IDs and references

Changes only stick once you save. Until then they are kept for the whole product, so you can move on to other items in the meantime; every changed item has a dot in the tree. Save saves everything at once. Leave the editor with unsaved changes and you are asked whether to save or discard them.

Because formulas refer to IDs, the editor checks those references for you:

  • Rename an ID that is used elsewhere and ID changed appears. Replace and save updates the ID everywhere in the logic; Save without updating leaves the old references in place — and those break.
  • Delete an item that is referenced and you get the same warning, listing the rules that depend on it. Delete anyway deletes it regardless.
  • The References block shows up front where a feature or subfeature is used in logic. Click a row to jump straight to it.

Live and development

A product can have two versions: live, which your customers use, and development — called concept in the editor — in which you rebuild in peace. A live product is locked by default; Edit live is how you deliberately take that lock off.

On a development version, Publish in the toolbar publishes it to live. Unsaved changes are saved first, and the current live version is backed up automatically.

Under Versions you find everything else around this: creating a development version (Create Concept Version), making a backup yourself, and the backup history, from which you restore an older version to the development version. There you can also download the product as a file and import such a file, as a new product or in place of this one.

Translations

If your company has more than one language, a language picker sits in the toolbar. Choose anything other than the default language and you are editing the translation: the field shows the source text as a grey placeholder, and fields not yet translated carry a warning underneath. The structure itself — types, prices, logic — is the same for every language.

Tips

  • Give an ID before you build on. Changing an ID later works, but it takes you through the reference check. Up front it is one field.
  • Build in concept. Even a small correction on live is immediately visible to anyone configuring at that moment.
  • Keep an eye on the preview. It follows your unsaved changes, so you see the effect of every change straight away — and only save once it is right.
  • Export before you edit a long option list. The CSV doubles as your backup of that list.
