Dealer editor
The Dealer Editor is the Product Editor for a product that is shared between two companies. It looks and works exactly like the normal Product Editor — the same structure tree, the same panels, the same live preview — but with one crucial difference: you are not editing the product, you are editing your overwrites on it.
Where to find it
You never open the Dealer Editor from the menu. It opens from Configurations:
- from From suppliers, on a product a supplier gave you permission to sell — then you are the dealer;
- from Dealer versions under one of your own products, by clicking a dealer — then you are the supplier looking at one dealer's version.
The editor opens full screen, without the usual top bar. The back arrow in the toolbar takes you back to where you came from.
Overwrites, not edits
The supplier owns the product: the steps, the features, the options, the logic. As a dealer you put a layer over it. Everything you change — a price, a name, a text — is stored as an overwrite on your own copy. Everything you leave alone keeps following the supplier.
That has two pleasant consequences:
- The supplier can keep improving the product. New options and corrections come through to you, without your prices being overwritten.
- You can always fall back. Set a field back to the supplier's value and the overwrite disappears with it.
And one thing to watch: an overwrite is bound to the item it sits on. If the supplier removes a feature, your overwrite on it disappears too.
Working in the editor
On the left the structure tree of the product, in the middle the live preview, on the right the panel of the selected item. Nothing selected yet? Then you see Select an item from the structure tree to edit.
The toolbar at the top holds:
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Delete overwrites | Removes all overwrites on this product at once, after a confirmation. Everything follows the supplier again. |
| In configuration / In quotation | Whether the selected item is shown in the configurator and ends up on the quotation |
| Open configurator | Opens this dealer version of the configurator in a new tab |
| Discard | Throws away your unsaved changes |
| Save | Saves — or Cmd/Ctrl + S |
Next to them you pick the language you are editing, and a search field finds items in the structure tree.
Saving works just as in the Product Editor: you can change several items one after the other, and Save stores all of them at once. Cmd/Ctrl + Z undoes a change, Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + Z or Cmd/Ctrl + Y redoes it.
Before saving, the same checks run as on your own products:
| Message | What is wrong |
|---|---|
| Missing ID | A feature or subfeature has no ID. An ID is required. |
| Missing feature type | The feature has no type yet (single selection, number input, …). |
| Missing display type | The feature has no display type yet — the widget the customer sees. |
| Feature type does not fit | The feature has subfeatures, but its type cannot have any. |
| Duplicate ID | Another item already uses this ID within the same scope. |
| Validation failed | One of the fields on the feature is not filled in correctly. |
| Auto-fix | Required to answer was switched on automatically, because a single selection always has to be answered. |
IDs are the plumbing of the product and belong to the supplier. That is why the Dealer Editor does not show the ID field: you cannot rename an ID here.
What you sensibly change
As a dealer you typically adjust:
- Prices — your own margin on the supplier's options.
- Names and texts — the wording your customer expects.
- Visibility — options you do not sell.
The structure itself belongs to the supplier and is fixed here: you cannot add, move, duplicate or delete steps, features or options, and a feature cannot be moved to another step. The logic between features you can reach, but every change makes your version drift further from the original.
Danger zone
At the product level there is a Danger zone, which does something different for each side:
| You are | Block | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| dealer | Delete supplier access | You revoke your own access to the supplier's product. It disappears from your Configurations. |
| supplier | Delete dealer access | You revoke this dealer's access. They can no longer sell the product. |
Click Delete and confirm with Delete once more; you then return to Configurations. The supplier can grant access again afterwards. The dealer has to accept the invitation again, and gets back the overwrites they had.
Tips
- Change price only, at first. That is why the sharing exists; everything else you can still do later.
- Use the live preview. It shows your version, with your prices — the fastest check that an overwrite has landed.
- Talk to your supplier before changing logic. An adjustment on their side over an overwrite on yours costs you both time.
